DO NOT WAIT TO DO THIS THE DAY BEFORE THE STORM
Have a copy of all your important documents in a safe place out of state. Insurance, Deeds, Stocks and Bonds, Wills, etcetera. Banks Safety deposit boxes are subject to flooding and damage as well as your home.
Make an evacuation plan with alternate routs, roads will get blocked up by traffic during these times. Don’t get caught out with out a back up plan or two. Let friends and or family know what your plans are.
Food and water for at least 10 days. Can goods stuff you don’t have to cook or heat up. Dry goods are ok but that means extra water. Drinking water figure about 1 ½ gal per person. Baby wipes and toilet paper and toiletries, bud repellant. Bleach is good to have for disinfecting rain water to bathe in. A 5 gal bucket is handy to hall water in to flush the toilet.
Have extra meds (at least a 10 day supply) with you and a copy of your doctors and your prescriptions. Aspirin you will need it.
Have an old standard phone, if the phone starts working and you don’t have power portables will not work.
Battery powered radio, flash lights and extra batteries. The shake up flash lights are great, no battery’s and the wind up power radio is good to.
Hurricane shutters: if it look like we are going to get a warning, close up some of the windows early. If you have storm panels, put up the smaller openings first then put up your big openings and leave 1 or 2 of the panels off so that you can get some light in. When it is time to evacuate or that we get a warring you will have less to do. Waiting to the last moment can get you into trouble.
Power and Gas: Before you leave or if you stay before the storm hits, shut off your gas and electric. If your home or business is damaged during the storm gas and electric can cause a fire and the fire department will not come out till the winds subside.
Flooding: If you are in an area that is prone to flooding or storm serge and you decide to stay get a Coast Guard approved life jacket for each person in your home. Put an ax in your attic space to cut the roof open.
